Sharing the Fun Side of Japanese Culture
Hugh Burleson, Forence Metcalf, Fusako Kusimi
With New Year celebrations behind us and Valentine’s day long gone, we look ahead to the next special holidays… In Japan on March 3rd the big event is “Girls’ Day” or “Dolls Day”. On this oc-casion fairly elaborate sets of hina dolls representing the imperial court of medieval Japan are traditionally are put on display. And true to the Japanese tradition, Hugh’s late wife, Kimie, had her own set—in this case, due to the ‘nomadic’ lifestyle of those in the Foreign Service, hers was a small portable set. Getting it ready for the meeting, Hugh shared it with his great– granddaughter—who’s now looking forward to it being hers one of these days—but he’ll share it with all of us first.
Florence Metacalf spent her first 20 years in prewar Japan as a member of a missionary family, then several more in the Allied Occupation after World War II during which time she collected many Japa-nese objects—enjoyed by those who have visited her home. She will share with us some of them as well as the practices that give color and fun to the Japanese through the year even today.
A native-born Japanese, Fusako-san, has even deeper roots and a more purely Japanese sense of the culture. This she has expressed in her book of poems and reflections on humanity.
Each of our three presenters will help our audience enjoy varied aspects of Japan, past and present. Each also has written a book that will be available for us to peruse and purchase (at author’s cost).
The BSCA would like to thank everyone who made the Lunar New Year Celebration a great success with special recognition to Andy Chin,Director-General of Taipai’s Economic and Cultural Office in Seattle, Ms. Tiffany Kan and the Northwest Association of Chinese Language Schools, Ms. Sue Hwang, and the Teen Diplomatic Envoys! The board members present had a great time and we hope you all did too! If you were unable to attend the event, please check our our gallery below. We hope to see you all again next year!
At BSCA we do our best to provide high school aged students the opportunity to experience a culture outside of the one they experience here in the US. Today, a BSCA member shared with us a link about how the proliferation of modern technology may have a negative impact cultural experiences when visiting places abroad. Robert Huesca, a contributor for the Chronicle of Higher Education, provides a personal anecdotal example of the negative impacts modern technology has had on an exchange program in Africa. BSCA is happy to announce that our January -February newsletter is now available on our newsletter page. We also would like to remind everyone about our upcoming Lunar (Chinese) New Year Celebration. If you are interested in attending this great event, please check out our Special Events Page for more information.
On December 14th, 2012, the Bellevue Sister Cities Association hosted an amazing event celebrating the 20 years of friendship shared by Bellevue and Liepaja. We were so excited to see so much community support and would also like to thank our sponsors, speakers, and everyone else who helped to make this event a success. Below, we have posted pictures of the event for those who missed it and hope you are able to join us at one of our future events. read more

Hello BSCAers! It has been a while since our last update, but we are proud to announce the release of our latest newsletter. You can find it here. Also coming up is our holiday party celebrating 20 years of friendship with Liepaja, our Latvian Sister City! Please see the invitation for this spectacular event below.
It has been twenty years since Bellevue, Washington and Liepaja, Latvia declared their friendship. With several delegation trips, dozens of students’ participation in our summer exchange program, and a playground project for the Liepaja Special School, our friendship with Liepaja has been very enriching and rewarding for the Eastside community. In commemoration of this fantastic friendship, BSCA will be hosting a night of celebration. Check out the details of this exciting event on our Special Events page.
